Guatemala police arrest female gang member in bus bombing that killed 7
Guatemala City, Guatemala (AHN) – Police on Wednesday arrested a woman in connection with a Guatemala City bus bombing on Monday that killed seven people.
Witnesses said the woman boarded the bus, left her bag on a luggage rack, exited the bus and then detonated it with a mobile phone. Using composite drawings made by police, she was identified as Sonia Veliz, a member of the Mara 18 street gang.
Gangs control the area the bus passes through. Police believe after bus drivers refused to pay protection money, a gang leader in prison ordered Veliz to carry out the bombing.
Public transportation in Guatemala is subject to extortion by gangs who demand protection money to travel through their territories.
Local human rights officials say that 170 bus drivers and other transit workers were murdered by gangs between January and November 2010. Police say that gangs extorted about $1.5 million during the same period.
